On the road to implementing an ecosystem approach to the management of Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem by Angola, Namibia and South Africa.
The Benguela Environment Fisheries Interactions and Training (BENEFIT) Program was a regional marine science and training programme involving three member states of the Southern African Development Community (SADC): Angola, Namibia and South Africa. Its overall goal is to promote optimal and sustainable utilisation of the Benguela ecosystem’s living resources by:
- Increasing knowledge of fluctuations in important living marine resources of the Benguela Current, and improving understanding of the way in which environmental factors influence these fluctuations.
- Developing human capacity and infrastructure for marine science and technology in the countries bordering the Benguela ecosystem, particularly in Angola and Namibia.
- Providing system-wide data and information for input for management of both national and shared resources.
Through these activities, BENEFIT provided more effective management of the Benguela’s living marine resources, promote job creation and contribute towards food security for the region.
BENEFIT Programme commenced in 1997 and merged into Benguela Current Commission (BCC) in 2008. For more information on this programme, please refer to its dedicated website www.benefitprogram.org
